Rural & Remote is about connecting people in rural communities to remote jobs as a way of creating pathways back home and opportunities for those who want to stay in their communities! Below you will find a success story from Kevin, a Rural & Remote graduate, internship participant, and active job seeker.
Kevin Johnson
The Rural & Remote program is all about providing a solid foundation for individuals to work remotely while earning competitive wages and working in a job field they love. Kevin Johnson is a great example that the R&R program is for people at any place in their lives, as Johnson completed the program and found an internship in medical coding as a retiree.
Johnson, a retired teacher, began his Rural & Remote Internship in November of 2021 and completed it in February of 2022. Johnson was able to capitalize on his interest in the field of medical coding.
“I did my Internship with R&R and Elite Revenue Solutions,” Johnson explained. “I took classes that prepared me for Medical Coding Certification half of the day and worked as a Medical Coder/Biller the other half of the day.”
Johnson found his time in the R&R program to be well worth it. “My experience with R&R was really positive. It was really the perfect situation for me. I was able to gain valuable knowledge that I needed through my AAPC classes while also getting hands-on experience in the medical coding/billing field.”
A positive referral from a trusted source is what guided Johnson toward beginning the program in the first place. “A good friend of mine had recently gone through the Rural & Remote program for Computer programming/coding and he set up an opportunity for me to talk with Rural & Remote staff,” he explained.
Though manageable, the Rural & Remote program does take a fair amount of time and commitment, but Johnson does not see this as a negative aspect. Instead, he recommends the program, saying to future enrollees, “I would tell them that if they are serious about it and are willing to put in the work, then the programs that R&R provides are well worth looking into.”
Benefits of remote work range far and wide, and depending on the individual, people view the benefits differently, but Johnson definitely experienced the benefits for himself.
“The commute from my bed to the computer is very short! LOL. But seriously, it is great to be able to work from home and the convenience that affords. I think the greatest challenge is to be self-disciplined enough to get your work done,” commented Johnson.
